This U.S. industry comprises establishments of health practitioners having the degree of M.D. (Doctor of Medicine) or D.O. (Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine) primarily engaged in the independent practice of psychiatry or psychoanalysis. These practitioners operate private or group practices in their own offices (e.g., centers, clinics) or in the facilities of others, such as hospitals or HMO medical centers.

Establishments of independent mental health practitioners (except physicians) are classified in Industry 621330, Offices of Mental Health Practitioners (except Physicians); Outpatient mental health and substance abuse centers are classified in Industry 621420, Outpatient Mental Health and Substance Abuse Centers; and Establishments primarily engaged in providing nonresidential counseling services for substance abuse, mental health, suicide intervention, and other crisis intervention social services to children and youth, the elderly, persons with disabilities, and all other individuals and families are classified in Industry Group 6241, Individual and Family Services.
